We Need to Talk About Calcium
Most people know that calcium is essential for healthy bones and teeth, but without adequate intake of magnesium and other vital nutrients, taking a high-dose calcium supplement may actually be detrimental to health! Recent studies have found that excess calcium appears to increase the risk of heart problems, kidney stones and other conditions. This is because, without enough magnesium, the body finds it difficult to transport calcium into the bones, meaning that calcium deposits can form in undesirable places like the arteries, kidneys and joints. Calcium also inhibits the absorption of magnesium and other nutrients, and, to make things worse, we need magnesium to activate vitamin D, another nutrient that is essential for calcium metabolism. All in all, it seems wisest to choose a combined supplement, such as Instant Cal-Mag-C, instead of an isolated high-dose calcium supplement in order to support bone health and overall health. This is definitely the case for anyone over the age of thirty, which is when the bone-destroying cells (osteoclasts) begin to outpace the bone-building cells (osteoblasts). Given that the bones are constantly remodelling themselves, it is essential to ensure a good intake of highly bioavailable calcium and magnesium to maintain bone density and strength and reduce the risk of osteoporosis, osteomalacia, fracture and bone and joint pain. Magnesium and other minerals help to prevent calcium leaching from the bones and supports the creation of strong, functional bone crystals. Unfortunately, many people have low levels of both magnesium and calcium, caused by:
  • Stress
  • Excess intake of caffeine and carbonated drinks
  • Excess alcohol consumption
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Menopause (after which oestrogen levels drop, affecting calcium metabolism)
  • Other hormonal disturbances
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Smoking
  • Dietary factors (such as an overly-acidifying diet full of animal proteins)
  • The use of certain medications (including some antacids, blood thinners, diuretics, corticosteroids and drugs for epilepsy and ulcers)
  • Malabsorption problems such as Celiac’s disease (where up to 75% of people have low bone mineral density).
Instant CalMag-C includes 290 mg of calcium gluconate and 245 mg of magnesium carbonate alongside 300 mg of vitamin C in every 5 g dose. The vitamin C helps to create the ideal pH for mineral absorption and also supports the production of collagen, the primary protein that forms the scaffolding on which bones are built. Collagen is also essential for healthy arteries and skin, but synthesis of this protein declines with age and is adversely affected by smoking, poor diet and inadequate levels of vitamin C. For anyone wanting to support the health of their bones, connective tissues and blood vessels, but who are concerned about the risks associated with calcium excess, an all-round supplement such as easily absorbable, optimally balanced Instant CalMag-C is ideal.
