Seaweed is a group of marine algae that naturally concentrates a broad range of minerals, trace elements, and iodine from the surrounding seawater. The most commonly used species in supplements include Ascophyllum nodosum, Fucus vesiculosus (bladderwrack), Pelvetia canaliculata, Palmaria palmata (dulse), and Alaria esculenta, which are native Atlantic wrack seaweeds harvested from the coastlines of Britain and the Nordic region. Seaweed is one of the few natural food sources of iodine, a mineral that is absent from many soils and therefore often low in plant-based diets.
