Folate is a B vitamin (B9) found naturally in foods such as dark leafy vegetables, legumes, eggs, and citrus fruit. Folic acid is the synthetic form used in the majority of supplements and fortified foods, and is the form most widely associated with guidance around pregnancy and foetal development. Methylfolate, also written as 5-MTHF or L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate, is the biologically active form of folate and does not require conversion by the body before it can be used, making it the preferred form for those with certain genetic variants affecting folate metabolism.
