Among the more commonly supplemented compounds in this group are vitamin D and vitamin K. Together, they are responsible for maintaining healthy bones, among other things. Studies have shown that the combination of vitamin K and D can significantly increase total bone mineral density (BMD) [1]. It has also been noted that it is vitamin K2 (MK-7) - due to its high bioavailability - that promotes skeletal quality and strength by influencing, among other things, collagen production and increasing BMD [2]. Vitamin K also contributes to normal blood clotting. Vitamin D helps to maintain healthy teeth and muscles, supports the proper functioning of the immune system, is involved in the process of cell division, and helps to properly utilise calcium and phosphorus in the body. Providing adequate amounts of vitamin D has been proven to increase calcium and phosphorus absorption by approximately 30-40% and 80% respectively. Disorders of calcium and phosphate metabolism negatively affect bone mineralisation, which may increase the risk of osteoporosis or skeletal deformities [3].

Vitamin D - due to the fact that it is obtained largely through skin contact with natural sunlight - is commonly referred to as the sunshine vitamin. Vitamin D deficiency is widespread and is estimated to affect up to 50% of the population. Menaquinone-7 (MK-7) is the best absorbed form of vitamin K2 with proven stability and activity. It is very difficult to consume vitamin D3 from the diet in the recommended amounts, and exposure of the body to sunlight leading to the production of the vitamin in the skin can be insufficient, and in autumn and winter additionally ineffective. In order to support the immunity we think about intensively during the autumn-winter season, we should provide this 'sunshine vitamin' in the right amount. However, its functions go significantly beyond immune care, so it is worth learning more about how important vitamin D3 is for humans of all ages.

Vitamin D is involved in the regulation of calcium and phosphate metabolism. It helps us maintain healthy bones and teeth and is important in maintaining normal blood calcium levels [2,3]. Vitamin D plays an important role in the body's immune function by influencing the innate and acquired immune response, which like a shield protects us from the external environment and pathogens [4]. The formation of new cells in the body, the production of insulin and the function of many genes are also dependent on the presence of vitamin D in our bodies [5]. The vitamin influences the proper development and function of skeletal muscles and is involved in optimising their strength, which is important for maintaining fitness in every individual [6].

Symptoms of vitamin D deficiency can include weakness in bones, joints, teeth, muscles, muscle tremors and even fatigue and impaired mood [7]. Dietary sources of vitamin D3 include fish, egg yolks, offal, and sunlight, which leads to the production of vitamin D in the skin [8]. Obtaining a sufficient intake of vitamin D from the diet is virtually impossible, and dermal synthesis via the sun may be suboptimal. Recent recommendations suggest supplementing vitamin D even throughout the year while ensuring hydration and adequate calcium intake from the diet [1]. How much we should supplement depends, among other things, on age, gender, physiological status, health status, and the current concentration of the 25(OH)D parameter in the blood.

Our supplement contains Quali®-D a stable and bioavailable form of vitamin D3 (naturally derived from lanolin), dissolved in MCT oil extracted only from the oil produced from the Cocos nucifera palm fruit. In order to support the immunity we think about intensively during the autumn-winter season, we should provide this 'sunshine vitamin' in the right amount.

It is primarily responsible for maintaining healthy bones and contributes to proper blood clotting. Studies have shown that menaquinone-7 (MK-7) - which is the best-absorbed form of vitamin K2 with proven stability and activity - promotes skeletal quality and strength by increasing bone mineral density and collagen production [1]. It has been suggested that vitamin K acts as an antioxidant. It is also seen to have properties that benefit cardiovascular function and support immunity. Vitamin K2 is essential at every stage of life - both in the early years and in adulthood. During adolescence, it supports bone and tooth mineralisation, as well as heart and immune system function. In later years, on the other hand, it supports healthy ageing by protecting against osteoporosis, among other things. This substance - due to its positive effects on the heart and bones - is also recommended for athletes. It regulates calcium metabolism, ensuring that calcium is delivered to where it is most needed and preventing harmful calcium deposition. In addition, vitamin K2 complements the effects of vitamin D3 [1,2].

Vitamin K is a fat-soluble compound and occurs mainly in two natural forms: as vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) and as vitamin K2 (menaquinones). The first type of this substance can be found in green vegetables and vegetable oils, among others. However, it is vitamin K2 - and especially its best absorbed form, MK-7 - that is particularly important for bone health. Dietary sources of vitamin K2 are animal products and fermented foods (e.g. natto). Vitamin K deficiency is most often associated with decreased bone mineralisation, which may contribute to the development of osteoporosis or other skeletal complaints [1-3].
